Dear PSC Supporter & Friend of Palestine

Please find below some actions that require your attention.

The next PSC meeting will be on Tuesday 3rd August, 6.30pm at 2 Ashgrove, Desmond Tutu House, BD7 1BN. Please try to attend.

In the wake of the murderous attack on the international aid flotilla, Israel is refusing to comply with requests for an impartial inquiry.
This is your opportunity to express your concerns about the ongoing house demolitions, siege on Gaza, child prisoners and use of illegal weapons on civilian population.

Please also remember to ask your local grocer if they are going to sell Israeli produce (details below).

We would like to ask you how you want future mail outs formatted as we do not want to clog uo your inbox. We do receive a lot of information, some of it needs to be sent out urgently as calls for action and some is purely news and information. There has been a suggestion that mail outs are sent as a 'digest' once a week with all news/information collated. Another suggestion is that we mail out emails one by one but on one particular day (which requires less scrolling downwards!). If you have a preference please let us know!

Please keep up the excellent work - now is not the time to waver - now is the time to stand up and be counted! Do not wait for the next Israeli atrocity against the Palestinians but make a promise to yourself that you will put aside an hour a week to campaign and learn about the occupation and the work to FREE Palestine!

(1) Appeal circulated by Brent PSC.
An effective way to carry on the boycott Israel theme... is with the jamming of the switchboard at the Israeli Embassy/London. But can be done from anywhere in the UK and EU.
It could be a very effective disturbance. The official phone number 020 7957 9500(for London) is the sole available for initial contacts with the embassy, and it can become easily oversubscribed by the calls of an eager public...

VIA BRENT PSC: Phone Siege of Israeli Embassy
Date: Thursday, 22 July 2010
Time: 14:00 - 15:30
Description

The Consular Department answers telephone calls Mondays to Thursdays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm only, the phone number is: 020 7957 9500.
We have been advised that Thursday is the best day to “call”! We
therefore propose Thursday 22nd July 2010 to begin with but hope to make this a regular event using different days of the week.
Once through you will be asked to choose an option: 2 is the consul’s
office.
If callers get through they should calmly suggest that Israel should leave
the occupied territories; make it clear you are calling on behalf of
Palestine… you will be cut off but try to prolong the “chat” for as long as
possible.
Once cut off immediately re-dial…. Hopefully there will be an engaged
signal, as we will be jamming the switchboard…. Keep at it and repeat.
IF there is a constant engaged tone signifying we have jammed the
switchboard but by all means try other options too.
We have invited other groups to participate from around the world… taking account of time zones.
The more the better. We can disrupt the work of the Embassy, voice our
protest direct and demonstrate the Israeli’s isolation at the same time.

(2) Blood dates in Bradford

Who is supplying Israeli dates to shops in Bradford?

All of the wholesalers below supplied Israeli dates to shops and markets in Bradford even after telling us they would NOT do so. This year, only SETHIZ have replied in writing and informed us they will not sell Israeli dates.

Please telephone the others and ask them why they are selling dates that are ripened with the blood and tears of the Palestinians? Does the Muslim community want to open their fast in Ramadhan with a BLOOD date?

If you decide to contact them, please be POLITE & COURTEOUS!

Write down the key points you wish to raise.

* Defended the sale of Israeli dates as a source of employment for Palestinians. Appeared to defend child labour until we challenged him. Repeatedly claimed that this campaign will achieve nothing. Informed us that he has made a complaint about this campaign to Bradford Council. He also claimed that we visited the wholesale market last year with hidden cameras and are trying to put him out of business (totally untrue). He admitted he has visited a farm in Israel and was satisfied that the Palestinian workers were treated well – he is one of the many wholesalers who are taken on a FREE visit to Palestine and heaped with special offers by Israeli producers.

Would not listen to any reasoning about the BDS movement. He has flown to Palestine on invite from the Occupiers and claims Palestinians need jobs....

UPDATE:

PSC and United4Palestine have visited the following stores:

On Leeds Road Ahmed Food Stores Orange Tree Pakeezah On Oak Lane & Lilycroft Lane: Mangla Price Check Solly Food Stores Jomil Food Stores Lilycroft Food Stores Park Bazaar 7EIGHT6 Food Stores Listerhills Lane Haq Halal All of the above stated clearly that they will not and do not stock Israeli produce. On our visit, none of them had any Israeli dates on display. Please visit your local supermarket/shop/grocers and ask them not to sell Israeli blood dates. Let us know which shops are selling Israeli dates so we can let everyone in Bradford & Yorkshire know who is supporting the Israeli regime. Each date you buy from Israel is not just money for bullets but a kick in the teeth of the Palestinians.

(3) Notice of Boycott Israel Network (BIN) Workshop

Margate 15-17 October 2010

Dear all

This is to give you details of the BDS Workshop to be held on 15-17 October at Margate.  This is the 3rd such workshop organised by BIN - a network of more than 20 organisations and groups committed to active BDS campaigning in response to the Palestinian call.  It will be another opportunity to take our planning forward and draw strength and ideas from the actions of others.

We urge you all to put this date in your diary, tell others about it and book a place NOW and, if you can, send a cheque to cover relevant cost (details below) - this will help to cover the hostel and hotel deposits already paid.  If you can’t send money now please still book - send copy of form to ann.  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  Please think about travel too - you can book much cheaper tickets if you do it well in advance.

Margate is a very interesting place! It has a harbour and wonderful sandy bay; often a good sea breeze but also wonderful sunsets. It claims to have been the first seaside resort in Britain, which decayed somewhat but is now being revived. Tracey Emin comes from Margate and is currently making a film about it (‘I never stopped loving you’!) and a new Turner gallery is being built in the town.

But the reason to come to Margate, of course, is to carry on consulting about and planning BDS action, including through the working groups set up at the last Workshop at Coalbrookdale. This work becomes more urgent and relevant by the day.  A programme for the week-end will be circulated nearer the time.

Details of the week-end

Accommodation

We have booked the Margate youth hostel, which holds 60 and is 10mins from the station (mainly 4- and 6-bedded rooms which will be one-gender).  It is not as updated as Coalbrookdale, but perfectly comfortable.  About half the rooms are en suite.  We have also booked 8 twin-bedded rooms and a 4-bed room on a B&B basis at a near-by hotel, so this makes room for a total of 80.  The hostel doesn’t have a room large enough for plenary meetings so we have also booked use of a ‘ballroom’ in the hotel and added a small charge to all per head prices to cover this.

Food

We plan to provide breakfast for hostel people on Sat & Sun, and for everyone

dinner on the Friday, & lunch on Sat & Sun.  We will ask people either to eat out or self-cater on Sat night (there are cafes, chip-shops, pubs etc. near-by). We will ask people to pay for food at the time, not in advance: totals of min £5 for hostellers & £4 for hotel people. We hope you think the prices reasonable.

NB - we need to fill the hostel to cover costs, so please only opt for B&B (only 9 rooms booked) if you strongly prefer or need it, & you’ll need to share a twin or the 4-bed room.  If you need single accommodation you will need to book another B&B.

Please fill in the form below and return to

Ann Hallam, Brighton PSC, 61 Montefiore Rd, Hove, E. Sussex, BN3 1PS

or e-mail Ann (ann. hallam @talk21.com)if not sending cheque
